Facial recognition from check-in to boarding

Frankfurt will be the first airport in Europe to allow passengers of all airlines to start their journey contactless. Passengers can use check-in machines with biometric identity and identification verification and thus pass through the various checkpoints at the airport at just one glance.

To use "Smart Path", you must either register with Star Alliance Biometrics on your smartphone beforehand or register directly at the check-in machine with a biometric-enabled passport. The process only takes a few seconds.

According to Fraport, more than 12,000 passengers are already using this forward-looking technology. As the airport operator further explains, at least 50 percent of all check-in kiosks as well as boarding pass control and departure gates are to be equipped with biometric systems in the next few months.

Lufthansa and the Star Alliance airlines have been offering facial recognition at Frankfurt Airport since 2020. Now the service is being extended to all airlines.

In order to speed up processes at the airport, passengers are becoming more and more open to new, digital procedures. For example, 75 percent of those surveyed prefer the use of biometric procedures to the traditional presentation of passports and boarding passes during check-in.
