Flying with SAF
Reduce CO₂ sustainably

Improve yourcarbon footprint now with Sustainable Aviation Fuel

As a corporate customer of Lufthansa City Center, you can now significantly reduce theCO2 emissions caused by your business trips. In cooperation with the Lufthansa Group, Lufthansa City Center is the first business travel provider to offer so-called SAF packages. SAF stands for Sustainable Aviation Fuel and is the generic term for all aviation fuels that are produced without the use of fossil energy sources.

How it works

Your contribution to the energy transition

Interested companies book an SAF package worth at least 2,000 euros for future flights with Lufthansa City Center. They receive an official Scope 3-compliant certificate from the international engineering firm Müller-BBM in Planegg near Munich confirming the corresponding CO₂ reduction.

The Lufthansa Group refuels its aircraft at the hubs with the amount of sustainable kerosene ordered by your company and guarantees its use within a maximum period of twelve months after the purchase of the package. The climate-friendly fuel is used in the aircraft of Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and Eurowings.

Protecting the climate with SAF tickets

Of course, sustainable air travel also comes at a price. For example, theCO2-saving SAF ticket with return flight on the Frankfurt to London route in Economy Class is 112 euros more expensive than the flight with classic kerosene. An intercontinental flight from Frankfurt to New York and back in Business Class costs 1,066 euros more.

The high production costs are the reason for the high prices. A liter of SAF is almost four times more expensive than normal aviation fuel made from fossil fuels. However, the positive effect on the environment is huge. If you book an SAF package for 2,000 euros with Lufthansa City Center, you will help the Lufthansa Group airlines to refuel with around 1,330 liters of environmentally friendly kerosene and thus save more than three tonnes of CO₂.

briefly explained

What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel?

There are various production processes with different starting materials for sustainable aviation fuels. The SAF currently used by the Lufthansa Group is produced from biogenic residues, such as used cooking oils. The airline group has secured sustainable kerosene for a quarter of a billion US dollars in order to be able to meet the expected demand in the coming years. However, the quantity currently available on the global market is not sufficient to use large quantities in flight operations. The Lufthansa Group is therefore actively involved in numerous projects to promote the availability of SAF.

SAF is an important step on the way to climate-neutral air travel. Currently, the use of SAF reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 80% compared to fossil fuels. In order to become 100% climate-neutral, the production and delivery processes, which also generate CO₂ emissions, still need to be optimized.
