The spread of invasive mosquitoes due to climate change increases the risk of infectious diseases such as yellow fever, malaria, dengue fever and other infections worldwide. Rising temperatures and changing climatic conditions favor the reproduction and spread of these mosquitoes. Researchers predict a geographical expansion of the affected areas and longer infection seasons.
In Europe, the number of cases due to imported infections is increasing. According to the RKI, a striking number of cases of dengue fever were reported in Germany in the first months of 2024 among travel returnees . Dengue fever is mainly found in Southeast Asia, West Africa, and Central and South America. In the recent past, however, autochthonous infections with the dengue virus, i.e. those not caused by travel, have also been reported in various European countries such as Croatia, France, Spain and Italy.
Travellers are generally advised to inform themselves about the current risks before starting their journey and to take appropriate precautions .
